About the Municipal Government
The City Charter prescribes that Hollywood operate under the Commission/Manager form of government. Policy-making and legislative authority are vested in the City Commission, which consists of a Mayor and six Commissioners. The Mayor is elected at large, and the Commissioners are elected by district on a non-partisan basis to four year concurrent terms. All seven seats of the City Commission were filled in January 2008. The next scheduled municipal election will coincide with the General Election in November 2012. In 2010, amendments were made to the City Charter which established staggered terms for the City Commission. The Mayor and the Commissioners from even-numbered districts will be elected for four year terms beginning in 2012. The Commissioners from odd-numbered districts will be elected for six-year terms in 2012 and then four year terms in 2018.
The Commission is responsible for, among other things, passing ordinances, adopting the budget, adopting labor contracts, appointing committees and hiring the City Manager and City Attorney. The City Commission also sits as the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Board which appoints the CRA Executive Director who reports directly to the City Commission/CRA Board.
